60 GB PS3 to be discontinued Ever since Sony announced it was dropping the price of the 60GB model by $100 to $499 earlier this week, there has been rampant speculation as to whether or not it would be a permanent price cut or a temporary one until supply of the model runs out. Today GamesIndustry.biz received confirmation from David Reeves, president of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, that the 60GB model will not be continued in Europe. But what about North America? Senior Public Relations Manager for Sony Computer Entertainment America, Patrick Seybold, has substantiated this news to IGN: the 60GB will not be continued in North America, either. In effect, this means the $100 price drop is only temporary."The 60GB PS3 will be available in North America for $499 until supplies of that unit are depleted," Seybold said. "We have ample inventory to meet the immediate needs of consumers in this territory for several months to come. We won't be making any further announcements regarding our PS3 model hardware strategy in North America until the 60GB model is exhausted and market conditions are evaluated." Seybold also shed some light on the company's plans for the older PSP model now that a redesign has been announced. Will it be phased out as well? Or receive its own price drop? "The newly designed PSP will replace the original PSP design starting in September with the $169.99 PSP Core Pack and the $199.99 Daxter PSP Entertainment Pack." -IGN peace

here's one way of looking at it....the rumble sixaxis is just around the corner....the moment it is out....retailers are gonna want to get rid of the PS3s with regular controllers coz no1 is gonna want those.....that'll be a good time to buy one of those....i wouldnt mind picking up one of those if the price difference is substantial

Capcom: Sony likely to cut PS3 price again
SANTA MONICA, Calif., July 11 (Reuters) - Sony Corp. is likely to cut its PlayStation 3 price again by year-end following this week's $100 cut, a senior executive at Japanese game software maker Capcom Co. Ltd. said.
"The number of PS2 users is still growing and a shift to the PS3 is on the back burner," Capcom Chief Financial Officer Kazuhiko Abe told Reuters in an interview on Wednesday.
"But, the price has been cut once and it is likely to be cut again towards the end of the year. I expect the (PS3's) installed base to grow gradually."
Sony on Monday cut the price of the PS3 to $500 in the United States in a move to breathe life into sluggish demand.
Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360 and Nintendo Co. Ltd.'s Wii have outsold the PS3 by several times in the crucial U.S. market, leaving Sony, which has dominated the game industry over the past decade, in the unfamiliar position of playing catch up.
The new price, however, is still $20 more than the most expensive version of the Xbox 360 and twice as much as that of the Wii.
Abe, visiting Santa Monica for the E3 video game exposition, also said sales of its action horror title "Resident Evil 4" for the Wii will likely exceed its target of 420,000 units for the current business year to March 2008.
"It is doing better than expected in Japan and the United States, and performing fairly well in Europe," Abe said. "Sales are bound to exceed 420,000 units."
Osaka-based Capcom is known for such major titles as "Lost Planet" shooting game and "Devil May Cry" action adventure.

A Sony representative confirmed on Thursday that controller rumble will make its way to the PS3 for the first time, this after several lawsuits surrounding the technology.
Kotaku's Brian Ashcraft is reporting that a Sony Computer Entertainment employee confirmed to him today that SixAxis with rumble is on the way. No other details were provided, although rumor broke earlier this week that a rumble-enabled controller would appear with the release of the new 80GB PlayStation 3 this August.

Southern Europe is Sony's Land
Only in three months since it was launched, PLAYSTATION 3 has became the preferred entertainment system by surpassing 216.000 units in Iberia (NdT: Spain+Portugal), being 194.000 of those systems sold in Spain", said James Armstrong, Senior Vicepresident of Southern Europe and managing director of SCEE. According Armstrong, "In this period, PLAYSTATION 3 has surpassed already X360 sales, which launched back in 2005, and it's tied with Wii, which launched in december of 2006, with a substantially lesser price". And he adds: "That sales figures make PLAYSTATION 3 the platform with faster market penetration ever

Sony to cut price of 80GB PS3 to $499?Industry analyst Michael Pachter expects the 80GB PlayStation 3 to drop in price to USD 499 once all stock of the 60GB model has sold out. The 80GB model currently retails in North America for USD 599 with a copy of Evolution Studio's Motorstorm, but Pachter believes the newly introduced unit will drop in price for the standalone console. "In our view, the Sony entry level price of USD 499 is here to stay," he said. "We believe that there are presently 2 – 3 million 60GB PS3's produced and not yet sold, and expect the entire supply to be diverted to the US to honour the new lower price point. "Once these units are sold through, we expect the company to lower the price of its 80GB model to USD 499 on a standalone basis." Sony Europe boss David Reeves revealed last week the 60GB PS3 would be phased out in the US, leaving the 80GB SKU as the only option to consumers. The analyst also predicted that Sony will again cut the price of the 80GB PS3 in early 2008. "We expect the USD 499 price cut to be maintained until early next year, when the 80GB model will likely be cut again to USD 399," he said. www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=26751peace

Sony's David Reeves hints at 120GB PS3 for Europe
It appears that Sony has quite different plans for the PAL market where hard drive size for PS3 is concerned, the company has hinted that a 120GB could well be in the pipeline.
SCEE president and CEO David Reeves has said the leap of 20GB from 60 to 80GB which has occurred in the US is too small a jump in capacity, but 120GB? Now you're talking...
"The difference between 60 and 80GB is very small, we just feel that going up 20GB is not worth it," Reeves told Norwegian website Dagbladet. However, "If you go to double it, it's worth it", he added. "So maybe you'll see something a little bit later."

Sony's Jack Tretton: 360 is an "unreliable cook", Wii a "lollipop" & PS3 " The Best on menu"How would you describe each current game console if you had to describe it as a meal or food? I think the PS3 is the Surf 'n Turf. You want the lobster and steak and you're going to give yourself the treat of getting the best thing on the menu. The PS2 is your favorite burger restaurant -- you go there for comfort food and it's just always good and is a good value. [As for the other two consoles], one [Wii] is a lollipop, and I'm too old for lollipops. The other one [Xbox 360] I get sick from once in a while because the cook isn't always reliable. read full interview- www.gamepro.com/gamepro/domestic/games/features/122988.shtml
