Along with the Playstation 3 jumping 2,800% in sales on Amazon.com, the fragFX controller for the system has amazingly jumped 30,053% to the number 1 spot - does this fact have any correlation to the PS3 system sales increase, or actually pinpoint that the jump in PS3 hardware sales is not so impressive after all?
Other PS3 items have jumped also, including MLB The Show, SIXAXIS controller, Fight Night Round 3 and Resistance: Fall of Man. Also on the increase is an intercooler for the Xbox360, coming in at numbe sorce-n4g

"Our initial expectation is that sales should double at a minimum," Jack Tretton, chief executive of Sony Computer Entertainment America, said in an interview.
"We've gotten our production issues behind us on the PlayStation 3, reaching a position to pass on the savings to consumers, and our attitude is the sooner the better."
Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter said Sony's price reduction would not double sales but may boost them by 50 percent to about 120,000 units a month.
"The greater significance is that Sony is signaling to the market that we're coming down the cost curve pretty fast in making this thing. It's a pretty consumer-friendly move," Pachter said.
Sony also hopes the PS3 will win some converts following Microsoft's admission last week that the failure rate of its Xbox 360 console had been unacceptably high, forcing it to book $1 billion in repair costs.
"We're especially proud of the fact that the PlayStation 3 has the lowest failure rate of any PlayStation product. It's absolutely the gold standard," Tretton said.
"The quality of the product and long-term viability is what ultimately wins."

the advantage of new technology, price fall much sooner. btw some sources were saying that sony was making a profit of the euro ps3,which led them to cut prices.. also 80gb version dosent have the EE chip so its not 100% backwards compatible.

Yeah, but Microsoft has announced that it is finalising specs for its new version of the Xbox 360 codenamed "Falcon". This will be based on a 65 mm die compared to the current box's 90 mm die. This should help the Box run cooler and make it more economical to produce. So M$ will be in a good position to combat Sony on price while still being profitable.

many people werent buying the PS3 because it was very expensive, not because of its price relative to the 360 or the Wii
to many people (like me) a price drop in the 360 and the Wii will be immaterial....as long as the ps3 prices falls below a particular point, they will buy it
so PS3's prict cut will increase its sales, whether or not its rivals cut prices

According to Belgian site PlayerOne, SCEE have announced a...well, not a PS3 price-cut, but some kind of an attempt at a sweetener. The PS3 "Starter Pack", which is going on sale August 1. Seems for €599 you'll be able to get a 60GB PS3, two Sixaxis pads, MotorStorm and Resistance. €599 used to get you just a 60GB PS3, so that's some serious savings right there. Provided you were going to get both games and a second pad, of course. If not and you wanted a price cut, well, you're shit outta luck (and might be any way, since both pads will need replacing soon) None of this is confirmed, of course, even if the box art shown is very nice, so eat eat EAT that salt while we wait for official word.
