RE1 was scary... mainly because it had the whole haunted mansion feel. RE2 onwards the series focussed more on action than scares and RE4 was all out action with very little puzzle solving...
RE5 seems to be set during the day time most the time and Capcom has said some parts of it are inspired by the movie "Black Hawk Down".
Still, I've never found the RE series to be particularly scary since it's sci-fi themed and not supernatural.

fear is scary ,but dead rising is not scary at all i played the game at 3 in the morning with lights shut i day sanjoy gave it to me. dead rising is a more comical than scary RE5 will be scary, capcom confirmed that they are placing the game in broad daylight to make it even scarier

Somehow zombies and mutant parasites don't scare me as much as mannequins and demonic nurses...
But I love the RE series a lot and I'm glad RE4 put a much needed kick into the franchise.

Yes precisly. Thts why sounds and lights are so important.....Re4 had very few scary moments. Fear was scarier definitely. Tried playing Silent hil but couldnt get past after certain stage. It creeped me out for sure though. Anybody here played undying(PC)?

^^ Yup. Undying was awesome! It kept getting less and less scarier as it went on though. The first few levels up until the first boss were damn scary though. Very effective atmosphere...

Totally agree....undying was one game that made me shit my pants! esp since all my gaming sessions started late at night with no one around and the lights turned down...still remember this one level where we need to cross a long corridor, right at the middle all the lights go out and we are attacked by monsters which jump down frm the ceiling! ...might not sound all that scary but it made me stop playin undying at night...all my next sessions were played in broad daylight with the volume turned down!! ;D

LOL...
The only way to play games like these is at night with the lights out! Otherwise it's no fun at all! I was always creeped out by the voices which keep saying "look around" (cue to cast the Scrye spell). Loved the part where you have to scrye near the portraits of the siblings. Creepy stuff!
