no actually, xeno is not wrong..if u connect yr earphones to a mic socket, the polarity of the magnets is reversed and they can function as poor quality mics....my friends have used this to record songs frm their guitar...they put the earphones in the hole in the guitar and connect the earphones to the mic socket....then when they play, the voice can be recorded....!!
but it all depends on what earphones they are...also on the socket....the socket in the controller is a dual socket tht has both voice input as well as output..so simply connecting the earphones wont work imo...

ok fine its time to clear some shroud...... normal earphones can work as mics cos the basic funda for both is the same...and in many cases its interechangeble... now the contention is there are two types of audio jacks(sockets) 2.5 mm and 3.5(3.2)mm
usually the earphones that we see for walkman(s) and other devices is a 3.5 mm jack. this CANNOT be used with 360 controller. Nonetheless this can be used as a mic in music systems/amps which have 3.5 mm jacks for mics.
The jacks for some Handsfree(s) for certain cellphones use 2.5 mm jacks(looks same as 3.5 but obviously a bit thinner).....some of these models can be used with 360.(the socket size of 360 is 2.5mm and not 3.5 mm. theres no way a 3.5 can fit there)
i have been using a motorola 2.5 handsfree with my 360 with some glitches. it gives echo to the rest of the gamers in servers obviously, cos of its sound feedback that usually phones are suposed to have.

vee-en was kinda right wid his theory.lets see if i can expalin it-in normal mics,a coil of cu wire is wrapped around a magnet loosely.when we speak into em da coil, which is attached to a thin sheet called diaphram, vibrates makin da coil vibrate too.due to these vibrations da coil moves up n down around da magnet due to which an electrical current drives thru da coil which is den amplified by an amplifier. speakers(earphones) use da similar apparatus to do jus da opposite thing-electricity is provided to da coil due to which it behaves like a magnet n repels da permanent magnet to vibrate da air around da diaphram. da idea is tat when we speak into da earphones,da vibratin air makes da diaphram vibrate too,& then u go again wid same theory stated above.huh...

yes my friend thats right but to spoil your party here coil mics are not used for headsets its capacitor mics...... anyways you can use none unless the jack matches.....
