THQ has officially announced that it's working on the previously rumoured PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 sequel to the successful pimp-me-up, Saints Row. However, a PS3 port of the original has been axed.

Saints Row 2 is in the works at Volition Studios, which created the original title, and is set to ship simultaneously on PS3 and 360 in 2008. However, in order to focus resources on this follow-up, THQ has scrapped plans to release a PS3 version of the first game.

"The original Saints Row earned critical acclaim for its stunning graphics, unparalleled customisation options and the genre's first-ever online multiplayer," said Kelly Flock, executive vice president of worldwide publishing, THQ. "The game's worldwide success shows the growing fanaticism for open-world gaming and our talented team at Volition is now using their proprietary technology to revolutionise the genre yet again."

The only reason they are holding off till 2008 is so that, they can completely clone GTA 4 this time as SR 2 !

Saints Row still coming to PS3; EB Games have display cases to prove it

When it was first reported that Saints Row would be coming to the PlayStation 3, a lot of people were skeptical about it. So EB Games turned out to be true when they said it was heading to the PS3, and the doubters became believers when the word came from THQ themselves.

After the confirmation came the rumors that development had ceased. For what reason, only the rumor mongers probably knew (that, or they had a hard time coming up with a supposed reason why Saints Row isn't happening for the PS3 anymore). Putting those rumors aside, Game Swank was able to get confirmation from THQ that the company has not, we repeat, has NOT cancelled Saints Row.

Where did they get the confirmation from? EB Games. According to their EB Games source, "We have received word from THQ that Saints Row is still in development for the PS3, anything else you may hear is just a rumor."

Well THQ certainly trusts EB Games, now, don't they? Anyhow, while there's still no official word (again) from THQ on the matter, they do have the display cases already for the PS3 version. Unfortunately, there's neither a clue nor an indicator as to when Saints Row for the PlayStation 3 may arrive.
