Ever since David Jaffe hinted at a big announcement on Friday I've been chewing at my nails, trying to figure out what it is. Sorry, I'm just one of those people you can't say that you've got a secret to tell them... tomorrow. I haven't been able to completely nail it down, but I have multiple sources confirming several aspects of Jaffe's big announcement. The tip of the iceberg is that Jaffe is forming a new studio with Sony Computer Entertainment of America's backing and that the studio will, among other things, develop Playstation Network titles. This new studio will be mainly peopled by the team that worked with him on Calling All Cars. I suspect, though no one has confirmed this, that the games he works on will lean very heavily toward episodic titles. More to come, all official like, tomorrow. kotaku.com/gaming/rumor/sony-backing-new-jaffe-studio-283011.php

Confirming earlier rumors that David Jaffe would be forming his own studio, SCEA has announced that this is indeed the case (source: ShackNews): the Incognito Entertainment founder, with the help of now-former president Scott Campbell and the backing of SCEA, has founded a new Utah-based game development studio. The name of this new studio is "Eat, Sleep, Play," and they just signed a multi-year deal with Sony to develop games exclusively for PlayStation platforms. The first title up for creation? Twisted Metal: Head On for the PS2, which we assume is a port on steroids of the 2005 PSP game. This one will boast a bunch of new content, including previously unreleased Twisted Metal: Black levels and a series documentary...the same documentary Jaffe recently blogged; the one everyone was talking about. There will be more to follow from the new studio in 2008, of course. After producing the stellar God of War titles, Jaffe said he wanted to focus on "smaller scale, more personal games," which was evident with his Calling All Cars title for the PlayStation Store this year. This doesn't necessarily mean that we won't be seeing any blockbusters from Eat, Sleep, Play, and we sure as hell can expect top-notch quality. "We are extremely pleased to be working with David and Scott and supporting them in their new endeavor," said SCEA senior product development VP Shuhei Yoshida. "Through hit after hit, they have established themselves as two of the most talented individuals this industry has ever seen, and I look forward to seeing what kind of further gaming innovation they can bring to the PlayStation brand through our new development deal." And if you're wondering what will happen to Incognito after Jaffe leaves, it will remain a fully-owned Sony studio, led by Warhawk director, Dylan Jobe. As for Jaffe's new studio, we can't wait for Head On (which can't be too far off, as it's for the PS2), and we sorely hope more Twisted Metal projects will be on the way...even though a next-gen TM flies in the face of Jaffe's desire for "smaller scale" games. Oh well, at least this is plenty big news, and we expect nothing but good things from Eat, Sleep, Play. www.psxextreme.com/ps3-news/1603.html
