Sony has confirmed that consumers in the US will not be offered the PS3 Starter Pack announced this week for Europe, and that soon the only PS3 they'll be able to buy will be the recently announced 80GB model.
Last night, David Reeves, President of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, revealed that once existing stocks of the 60GB PS3 are sold, that's that for this version of the machine.
"All they're doing is taking their stock in trade that they've got at the moment of the 60GB model, marking the price down and it will all be gone by the end of July," Reeves said, according to a GamesIndustry.biz report.
So Sony's move this week to cut the price of the 60GB PS3 by $100 in North America is more about clearing stock than encouraging new buyers. Once stocks of the console are spent, US gamers there will only be able to purchase the recently launched 80GB version.
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe confirmed to Register Hardware today that the new 60GB PS3 Starter Pack will not be offered in the US and Canada.

Sony's Kaz Hirai is confirming that they're no longer producing that model. He says:
We're no longer in production for [the 60GB PS3], so once that product is gone from the retailers shelves, then we're back to the $599 SKU only, so it's not like we have a two-price strategy here in the US market, which we found out very early on, that consumers react mostly to having one SKU as opposed to two.
