yes...they are currently region-free but there is talk of that possibly changing in the future
taken from the FAQs at the UK Playstation website
Will there be region coding on PS3™ games?
At time of writing all PLAYSTATION®3 Blu-ray Disc™ games are not Region coded. However, certain functionality specific to the game title may be disabled and unreliable if your game is not from the same region as your PLAYSTATION®3 system.

Sam, I think PSX games need not be PAL, because the original PSX never did have region locking. PS3 is not BC with all region PS2 games because of DVD regulations and not because of any hardware/software limitations. Since PSX games never had any region locking of sorts, I think all PSX (read Original) games should play. However, this is only my assumption. Can anyone clarify on the PSX games BC? As of now on the PS3, for games: PS3: All regions playable, NO region locking as of yet (the provision is there though). PS2: Only proper region games will be BC. That is if you are from the PAL region, only PAL PS2 games will be BC. PSX: All BC. Again, someone needs to clarify this point.

firstly it depends which console u have....if u have an NTSC-region console, u can only play NTSC versions of games.....in that too NTSC-J (Japan) and NTSC-UC (N America) will differ
