It's rather easy to raise skills in Oblivion, you can actually exploit the game a lot to raise your level!
For example, have Block as one of your major and keep blocking all the time! Or have Heavy Armor/Light Armor and well as Restoration as your majors. Then keep taking hits and healing and you level up in Heavy Armor/Light Armor as well as Restoration! Finally having Athletics as a major skill also helps. Just keep running everywhere!
These are just a few examples. There's a lot more you can do. I've started Oblivion with a new character last month. I'm at level 25 and I haven't even touched the Main Quest!

Thats why i quoted using the skills which DONT need u to be in combat is easier...

You're forgetting that in Oblivion, all enemies level up with you.
Trust me, it's not that difficult to keep getting hit and healing at the same time. Especially if you're fighting a low level enemy in the early stages. Might be a problem if you're a pure melee/fighter character though since you'd be low on Magicka.

yup u are right...but i remember dying in the sewers cos if pathetic rats attacking me... IMHO i wouldnot try increasing heavy and light armour skill this way.. but then again its descretion... your default restoration spell and magicka might have been bigger than mine.. i opted for increasing conjuration and alteration first..because it doesnot require me to be in combat...i kept using it even when i was running around exploring things...this is goverened by intelligence...which decides your maximum magicka.. so my intelligence was 100 even before i reached level 20

Yeah there's tons of different styles you can play with! I usually prefer a melee + spellcaster type of character. I could never pull off ranged combat successfully in Oblivion, maybe it wasn't implemented well I guess.

right!!! same here....i opted for battle mage(has inclusion of spells and blade/blunt as major skills)...and bang on target.... through the game i realised that i SUCK in ranged attacks.... glad i am not alone

invictus, have you found the Umbra sword? It's *the best* sword you can get in the game. It auto casts Soul Trap every time you hit an enemy, has zero weight and deals a ton of damage! Just look for an Ayelid ruin called Vindasel just outside the Imperial City. Inside you will have to fight a woman named Umbra. She's quite tough to beat but the sword is worth the fight!

Haha... that ring sounds like a gift from Akatosh for melee fighter... lol...
BTW, Umbra has a damage rating of 28 as far as I can remember. Also you're never encumbered while carrying it!

Finally after level 37 four master skills and 3 journeyman, 1.6lac gold, 56 shield, 1025 encumberence and 100 hours..i completed main quest.. have quietly kept the cd in its green sheath and kept it in the dark corner of the room... i think for long i will happily enjoy short shooter stints... and will never complain that shooters on 360 are very short..

It sure is!
BTW, when I finished Oblivion for the first time, I did all the city quests / guilds / misc. Daedra shrine quests etc. before I finished the Main Quest. I'm playing through it again and I'm doing the Knights Of The Nine expansion quest currently. I haven't even touched the Main Quest yet...
