Its gonna be smaller than the area covered in GTA : San Andreas. but the city will be meticulously detailed and will have a lot m ore interactivity.
Brandy, go back several pages in this thread and read through them. You will find a wealth of information that our super members have posted on this game.

Its gonna be smaller than the area covered in GTA : San Andreas. but the city will be meticulously detailed and will have a lot m ore interactivity. In the E3 2007 T2 press conf, T2 presenters said that the GTA IV map size will be almost the same as San Andreas. In an announcement that is sure to drive fans wild, the presenter confirmed that GTA IV's scope and scale is on par with San Andreas - but much more focused and packed with detail. .... However, the lighting and atmosphere is undeniably hot - it's night time and the hours start to pass, drawing out the sun and showing off the HDR lighting, which is very realistic. .... Lastly, as the demo ended and the screen was paused, we got the shortest glimpse of the map for a split second and indeed it's a big game. It looked like two enormous islands linked at the middle, but the glimpse was so short that we could be wrong there. However, in line with the presenter's comments, we're expecting San Andreas scale here.for more info check out the link : ps3.ign.com/articles/804/804238p1.html

OK today im in a posting frenzy....some more info on GTA 4, but this is from wikipedia, so i'm not sure how trustable the source is. But looks to be cool....pedestrains reporting crimes is a bit too much of AI, wonder how R* are gonna implement such stuff ! The Police AI and star wanted levels have also been re-done. Instead of having to change his car, Niko will now have to avoid a certain radius marked on the map in which the police will be looking for him. The size of this radius will increase with the player's wanted level (the more stars, the bigger the radius) Additionally, pedestrians can now report crimes such as carjacking, and the previous games' method of changing the paint job at Pay'N'Spray has been replaced by the strategy of clandestinely changing vehicles in empty areas such as parking garages.link : en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GTA_4#_note-17

Reports are are still coming out of E3 that R* North is having a very hard time getting the entire GTA IV game onto a DVD-9 for the XBox 360. Ontop of that GTA IV might be the second 360 game that requires the HDD to play GTA IV. R* said they are having problems with getting the streaming to work correctly with the 360. Since theirs no HDD on ever 360.
Does this mean GTA IV for the 360 will ship on two DVD's? Will HDD be required to play GTA IV? Only time will tell.
on PS3 side. During a Interview with Phil Harrison/ When asked about DLC for GTA IV. He said he could not official comment on the situation. He did give a few hints. That PS3 will also get Exclusive DLC in 2008 along side of the 360 DLC.
Few analyst and Reporters. Are saying that unless Microsoft allows companies to Use the HD-DVD for games. GTA V(whatever the next game in the series after IV). GTA V will go to the PS3 exclusively. It's Unclear if they heard this from R* or R* hinted at this. Still a long time before we know if this will happen.

Two disks have been done in the past and if they're needed they'll be used again, it's not costing them much anyways.
