from another forum, they were invited to the codies studio
We meet the four other chaps to go on the tour with us and off we go. All in all it's a pretty impressive complex. Situated on a big farm there is plenty of grounds for the employees to use, with a couple of chaps heading out to fly a remote control aeroplane at one stage. The main building sports a glass front leading into reception and it's an airy spacious room containing three consoles with Codemasters games running on them set-up to play.
Rubber is joined by Sam and he proceeds to take us on a tour of the complex. For the most part it's fairly standard, lots of corridors and rooms and plenty of posters on the walls of various games they have produced. We take in the recording studio and get to see where the likes of Dan Gower and Paul Agnew have been recording (in joke )
Eventually we come to the nitty gritty as we move onto the development area. Downstairs a good 50 odd people are all working on a new Colin McRae game. I say working, but which I mean playing a mix of Pro Evo, Counter Strike and World of Warcraft. We are reliably informed it is their lunch time, and not just a bunch of lazy layabouts that would put even Stevie to shame.
Upstairs and we finally come to where Brian Lara Cricket 2007 has been produced for the last 2 years. We're introduced to a few of the team including forum member JohnJ. They treat us to some demonstrations and we are allowed to put forward questions with some informative answers from the chaps. First up we get shown some of the 70 new facial animations and the various ball states as it goes from new to old.
We get some inside gossip that Ricky Ponting and his advisors weren't happy with his bald spot, especially when the lighting kicks in and produced a shine even Zim would be proud of. We also see the stadiums and their lighting effects, all of which look highly impressive.
Next up it's fielding animations, and almost before I was able to ask whether slips now took catches at higher than knee height we're shown a slip fielder making a stunning diving motion to take a catch above his head. All in all the fielding animations have been massively improved, and they look mighty smooth. We are again reliably informed that unlike EA players they won't be throwing the ball back to the keeper whilst looking at the crowd. They then load up a group of fielders to show them celebrating a wicket and a rather scary image for bowlers around the world as seven Brian Laras all converge on each other. *mental note to self - a Brian Lara zombie film would be awesome*
After being shown the ins and outs of the studio and introduced to various members of the team the moment everyone has been waiting for arrives. It's lunch! Codies prepare a typical English Cricket tea, with sandwiches, wraps, caramel squares and crisps as we settle down into the meeting room eagerly awaiting the chance for a first hands on with the finished game. We are joined by two Matts who have both been involved with the gameplay side of the game, and they proceed to take us through the basics. Immediately the menus look vastly improved, the sound is good, and the colours bright and cheerful. I'm sure none of that was down to the 60 odd inch HDTV the game was being played on! I have to keep an eye on Kev as he starts to try and convince me to steal the Ps3 they also have in the room. *This may or may not be entirely factually accurate*
Having been shown the new features like the sweep shot and coming down the wicket, it is time for Kev to step up to the plate and get involved with the game. With only one chance to see what's it like he takes the controversial decision to pick the mighty Bermuda for his 6 over match. It is immediately apparent that the bowling speeds have been sorted from the last game, and graphically the game, whilst by no means spectacular, has a certain charm to it. The crowd is pretty good, and the stadiums excellent. *mental note to self - The Brian Lara zombie idea is rubbish, scrap it*
The stand out feature early on is the sound. The crowd are interesting, the commentary is again pretty good (we unfortunately get Bill "Australia are the bestest at everything Lawry), the players are now interesting shouting out things like "run there", "yes", "that's going" and other comments that help to create an immersive atmosphere. We are told that when India play you'll get more horns in the crowd, and with the Windies the sound of drums.
With the level set to slog, runs come fairly thick and fast throughout the session, yours truly hitting possibly the first fifty by a member of Joe Public. It perhaps doesn't speak much for the realism though that it was Michael Vaughan! On the graphical side players career stats flash up when they come on to bowl, and it is definitely a step up from BLIC 2005.
Now onto the gameplay. The batting seems more realistic in that attempted aerial cuts would fly to third man, and the square cut for 6 every ball seems a lot trickier. Since we only got to bat on slog mode it was difficult to really judge how it will play on the harder levels. Coming down the wicket has perhaps controversially been linked with the confidence, and you can only pull it off with a full confidence bar. The sweep shots look nice, and the animations for the shots for the most part seem like slight improvements on the previous game but no massive steps made.
I personally didn't get to bowl, and being on slog mode it was difficult to really gauge what it was like. It certainly didn't seem to swing as madly as the last game, and with it being on a hot sunny day it shouldn't have done so that was good to see. As mentioned the speeds seem to be sorted out, and later on when there was a brief test of the AI batting on test mode there was good pace to the deliveries.
The fielding again I didn't get to personally try, but it seemed more varied. You now manually have to catch the ball behind the wicket, and I can see it being a feature that divides players as we were told that the ball will rarely fly through to the slips as a result of making the mechanic feasible. When throwing, mistimed throws can result in overthrows, as well as the keeper not taking the ball at all cleanly. For the most part the fielders behaved in entirely believable ways, but there were a few holes with keepers unrealistically taking the ball one handed too often. Essentially it was only aesthetic, and it looks like we won't be seeing EA style byes where the keeper is thinking about whether he left the oven on.
The AI was something we only got to have a brief look at at the end, and the signs were promising. In a 6 over game the Codemasters forum member who had a go was hammered for 96 off the 6 overs he bowled on test level and struggled when attempting to chase it, so it appears the game will offer a challenge at least for a while to the single player users. In terms of multiplayer it definitely looks like it will still be a blast to play.
Moving onto that multiplayer, not only does it look like it will be great fun to play, but they were very keen to stress that they believe the online mode will be a superb experience in terms of quality. They were very confident in the strength of the net code, and reckon that the online game will play as smoothly as offline. If they are right, this game will be fantastic in multiplayer mode.
With time running out, the moment to throw us out had arrived. It was probably for the best as Kev was starting to moan about Cricket 07, and his attempts to claim the ps3 had reached desperate levels, witnessing a grown man cry and beg on his knees is not a pretty sight. *Again this may or may not be accurate, or even remotely true*
We said our goodbyes to Mark, Mark and John, all of whom were fantastic throughout answering any questions, and talking openly and honestly. They realise that the game could be better, but as they said, at the end of the day there are budgets and deadlines to meet, and they are confident they have produced as good a game as was possible. Things like statistics in tournaments are missing and I know that will disappoint some, but at least the features they have in the game actually work... no names mentioned.
After that it was time to head off to the pub for a well earned drink on Rubber's part and at Codemaster's expense. We all had a good old fashioned chat and ramble for a while, before it was time to head home and bring an end to an enjoyable day out.
