While Hollywood holds its breath for tomorrow's announcement of this year's Academy Awards nominees, gamers got one step closer to rolling out their own red carpet. The Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences (AIAS)--the gaming industry's equivalent of the Oscar-doling Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences--announced the nominees for its own award show, the 10th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards.
"I'd like to thank the Academy and
the dude who made this gun. Free Tibet!"
Leading the way with 10 nominations is the multimillion-seller Gears of War from Epic Games for the Xbox 360. In addition to GameSpot's Game of the Year award, Epic may add the AIAS awards for Overall Game of the Year, Console Game of the Year, and Action/Adventure Game of the Year.
A two-way tie for second-most nominations goes to Bethesda Softworks' The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, both with six. All three games, along with Wii Sports and Guitar Hero 2, are in the running for Game of the Year honors.
The winners will be announced on February 8 in Las Vegas as part of the D.I.C.E. Summit. Jay Mohr returns to host the event, which last year awarded God of War with the evening's top prize.
