Printer/scanner superstar Hewlett-Packard showed off its plans to enter the PC gaming market last night, and unsurprisingly there was an air of hostility towards those old-fangled games consoles the kids are talking about these days.
The first snipes came from a panel of industry leaders that included Games for Windows boss Rich Wickham and other gaming bods. "I believe the days of the console are numbered," said Trion World Network founder Lars Butler. "There is one more generation of gaming consoles and that is it," he claimed.
The broadband game publisher boss says that the gaming potential of PCs could render games consoles obsolete.
Advertisement: NVIDIA vice president Roy Taylor also painted a rosy future for the mouse and keyboard side of gaming: "Our advantage as developers is we know what is coming," he said. "And what is coming is far ahead of the console. You will see a huge difference between what you can get on a PC (personal computer) and a console."
HP plans to roll out a new line of gaming gear later this year including a curved computer display designed to immerse players in the action.
As PC tech climbs above the capabilities of the next-gen consoles it will certainly be interesting to see if the dooms day prophecies for PC gaming yet again turn out to be hot air. Let us know what you think in the comments section below.

You'll always get better graphics on a PC, if you have the right set-up. But, the main question is, are people ready to fork money to buy new graphic cards every 6 months or so? Seems like there always comes along a pc game that pushes the boundry in graphics term. Crysis seems likely to do that.
I'll stick with my console, it doesn't need to be upgraded with fancy graphics card and other things.

if there is anything that can be learned from the success of the wii is that graphics are not the be all and end all of video games. there will always be people (like me) who are tired of constantly upgrading their PCs to keep up with the demandeing system requirements for the games. consoles offer a pop-in-and-play option which will always be their USP. if the gaming industry ever hopes to increase the number of female gamers, consoles are the way to do it

OK, as a PC gamer first I'll have to admit that PC gaming has an edge over consoles. But the cost factor and the pick-up-and-play factor of consoles makes a big difference. A decent mid range to high end graphics card will cost you the same as the latest console in the market. And not to mention that you need a decent computer first! These days PC games are becoming more and more dependent on the CPU and RAM besides graphics cards. Also graphics cards start getting obsolete in a little over a year while usually consoles stay in business for about 4-5 years. Hell, the PS2 is still going strong! Another factor is the type of games consoles and PCs offer, imagine playing a Sonic or Mario game on the PC or playing an RTS or a Civilization type game on a console. It wouldn't work as well as the platform a game is meant for...
So we'll never have a clear winner here. But I totally disagree with the "The days of consoles are numbered" comment.

^^^ precisely tyler...but should i mention here that major chunk of popular games are still shooters which have already come to console and we have had many smash hits... AFA RTS is concerned they are slowly coming to consoles too... experience is not as great as a PC but its still a compensation..... If we take a look around, cos of all eyes set on console wars, pc game developing has slowed down... IMO consoles for now HAVE an edge over PC(cant say for how long)

every time a console generation starts ppl say pc gaming will be dead ,happened in da ps2 era,and happened this gen(tho crysis saved it big time),but somehow pc gaming floats and stays alive.

consoles are way better imo....firstly, no upgrades, software or hardware...tht is good....u can buy 1, use it for 2-3 yrs and then get another 1.... 2) gameplay is more fun with the controller imo....all the buttons are nearby and within a finger's reach...unlike the keyboard, where u constantly have to keep adjusting.... 3) the best thing is tht u can play upto 4 ppl per console....also MP on xbl is fun....team chat, etc....quite relistic...!!
basically, some ppl like me are never goin back to the PC again....it'll just be 1 console after the another....
also, if anyone tells u tht there can be no further development in a particular sector....tht guy is plain stupid....if PCs can develop, then so can consoles....just look at the spring dashboard update....it will make yr 360 almost like a comp....also ps3 has linux....!!

Eh, I'd say it's personal preference, and also the games you want to play. I've already tried arguing over this point so many times on other forums and stuff and there's always no clear winner.

ok i agree that comp has better gfx than the consoles, let us assume that u have 4 gb video card...which makes u unique as most of us have video cards below 1gb...now how many companies would really make a game having gfx which would give justice 2 the 4 gb video card...they cant make a game ONLY for u can they?

yea, the highest so far is 1gb...!! the usual stuff in the market it 256 mb...!! 4gb is way too big for VRAM...
but anyways, comp gfx are way better, i agree....but gameplay is more fun on a console....and also playing with friends rocks...u cant play games like nba with 3 other friends on a comp...!! but u can on a console...
