www.digitalspy.co.uk/gaming/a42660/playstation-3-enjoys-record-pre-orders.html?rssEuropeans are going head over heels for the PS3, and Sony's next-gen console is currently enjoying record pre-order numbers. According to reports from Digital Spy, Woolworths revealed that it was taking one order every 20 seconds during the past week. Woolies, one of the first stores to accept pre-orders, has admitted it has been staggered by the demand. Gerry Berkley, Woolworths' head of games, said, "It's the hottest gaming system since the PS2 launched in 2000 - demand will outstrip supply." It seems that the 60GB PS3's UK£ 425 retail price - which makes it cost UK£ 125 more in the U.K. than in the U.S. - has failed to deter those determined to grab one for themselves. The 60GB PS3 will launch in Europe on March 23. Keep checking back here on QJ for more updates regarding the launch.

gamerevolution.com/news/view.php?id=2242Sony sweetens Euro PS3 launch...Bond style Sony has announced that a Blu-ray version of the most recent 007 movie, Casino Royale, will be delivered to the first 500,000 PlayStation 3 owners to register their machine on the PlayStation Network following the PS3's European launch on March 23rd. The news comes from Sony's Darren Carter, VP of brand and consumer marketing, who called this latest offer a "phenomenal incentive" for customers to sign up for Sony's online service. The sales promotion would be similar to that of the American PS3 launch, which offered a Blu-ray copy of Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby to the console's first 400,000 American customers. Casino Royale will take full advantage of 1080p resolution, and will offer PS3 owners the chance to experience high definition Blu-ray in their own living rooms for the very first time. "Casino Royale not only makes the most of the features and capabilities of the Blu-ray format, but is one of the most exciting and entertaining movies to debut on Blu-ray this year," Carter said in a statement. As if potential European PS3 owners didn't have enough to get excited about, Sony also recently told EuroGamer.net that a 30 title-catalog will be ready and on sale for next month's launch, according to Sony of Europe representative David Wilson.

In a sign that HD DVD might well be dead on arrival when it is released in Australia within the next couple of months, major Australian entertainment retailer, JB Hi-Fi has commented that they will only be stocking Blu-ray format HD movies and entertainment. According to iTWire, the company has backed the PS3's format of choice, simply due to the number of film companies who have committed to the format. "Blu-ray is the only format that has the ability to tell the whole story, with the most comprehensive offering on the market. With seven of Hollywood's leading studios accounting for the vast majority of 2006's home video sales, among the 170 plus companies globally that support Blu-ray Disc, it makes sense that content will be king when it comes to Blu-ray," commented JB Hi-Fi Marketing Director Scott Browning. We are curious as to whether this will affect their decision to sell the Xbox 360's HD DVD drive add-on, which is scheduled to be released in Australia in late March. We are currently seeking comment from the company, so check back soon for any developments. ps3.ign.com/articles/764/764444p1.html
