The Japanese are the most deviant civilization on earth. The level of perversion and depravity that permeates the popular culture there is far above that which is seen in other countries. We have seen or heard about the various japanese rape vidoes or hentai movies. But the thing we have to consider is that all this deviance is possibly a by-product of the creative, inventive genius inherent in the Japanese mentality. They are regarded the most workaholic of any population in the world and are also generally much more receptive towards the creative, spiritual and abstract aspects of life and arts.
This is probably why RPGs and puzzles form a mainstay of the Jap gaming scene. They are constantly looking for ways to exercise their brains and give vent to their creative side. Just look the sales of the brain training games on the Nintendo DS. The original Xbox set a pretty terrible precedent in terms of the type of games available on the system. It didn't help that the shape and size of the system was repulsive to the more sensitive artsy tendencies of the Japanese. That revulsion has carried over to the Xbox 360. This, coupled with the strong nationalistic pride, had basically scuppled the chances of the Xbox 360 at the outset itself. No doubt, Microsoft;s new box has made significantly more progress than its previous incarnation, and M$ has spared little expense in trying to craft titles to appease the sensibilities of the Japanese gamer, it is still not enough to overcome the irate inertia against its product in the Japanese market. The terrible advertising campaign in Japan didnt do M$ any favours either. Sakaguchi (of Mistwalker fame) himself criticised M$'s "go go go" campaign saying that it didnt make any sense and wasn't able to make a connection with the Japanese audience. And that perhaps sums up the relationship that the X360 has with the Japanese market.
