In a chat with MCV, DS product manager James Honeywell elaborates on Nintendo's plan to put its latest home and handheld consoles on speaking terms. While no time table for release of interoperability features is revealed, Honeywell claims that gamers can expect a departure from the functionality offered by currently available combinations like the PS2 and PSP, or the Xbox 360 and Windows PCs.
"Our competitors might offer connectivity between formats, but they concentrate on media capabilities, rather than the fun and interaction you'll get when you bring our two consoles together... The link-up between Wii and DS will be much more about offering new forms of gameplay, fun, and interaction."
The logistics of how this link-up would work have not yet been revealed. Given the DS and Wii's insistence on using strings of numbers to identify hardware, rather than a gamer tag or user name, it remains to be seen how intuitive such an arrangement will prove to be, but the possibilities are certainly exciting.
