Sony has confirmed the PlayStation 3 will be released in the UK and across Europe on March 23, priced £425 (599 Euros). A million units will be available for launch, although how that number will be divided across the different territories is unclear. As expected, only the 60GB model will be initially available, although Sony hasn't written off launching the 20GB version, stating, "Following the launch period we will review the situation and introduce it if there is sufficient demand from consumers."
30 titles will be available from day one, including Resistance: Fall of Man, MotorStorm and Formula One Championship Edition, as well as eight titles ready for download via the PlayStation Network. Gran Turismo HD Concept will also be available for download from launch, so those of you lucky enough to own a 1080p HDTV will finally get to put it through its paces.
Following in the footsteps of the US and Japanese launches, the console will ship with a single SIXAXIS controller and a composite cable, along with version 1.5 of the firmware, with 1.6 available for download shortly after. Additional pads will cost £34.99 each, plus a range of official PlayStation cables - HDMI (£17.99), AV Scart (£12.99), component (£17.99) and S-video (£12.99 - all available when the machine hits the shelves. Movie-loving buyers can also pick up a Blu-Ray remote control for £17.99.
Sony also announced the PlayStation 3 will launch in Russia on April 20 and that a release date for India will be revealed soon.
Commenting on the launch, Ray Maguire, SVP and MD of SCEUK said, "Following the hugely successful launches of PS3 in Japan and North America, we are absolutely delighted to be able to bring significant numbers of PS3 to the UK. To be able to launch with over 30 titles including retail versions and great downloadable gaming experiences across every genre shows that this is our strongest launch line-up in the history of PlayStation, and is what PlayStation fans in the UK have been crying out for.
edit: The PS3 will be launched in the PAL territories of Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Australasia on March 23, 2007 at a price of € 599 (£ 425, AU$ 999.95, NZ$ 1199.95, US$ 776).
