i agree -- owning two 'legit' next-gen consoles is an EXPENSIVE proposition (especially with 4 out of 5 games being cross platform)

Vin This guy is in HK to check on production as they simply cannot cope with the amount of orders from Asia. They seem to have no interest in India in the near future as they are losing money on the consoles and Indian gamers do not spent a lot on "Legit" games. They could release those same consoles in Europe or Australia and make a lot more money of those gamers.
FYI they have enough orders from HK/TW/China to occupy all production lines until Dec 07. Then we have PAL systems...What makes you think they will give India priority over other markets which make them loads more.
I guess we will find out in March.

all valid arguments BP -- i'm just relaying what i heard from sony's official indian partner (and not from a flunkie within the company but the horse himself).

the games are region free / the BR movies are not.
and the console will still need to output a signal that's specific to its location -- PAL in EU/AUS, NTSC in JAP/US, etc

BR Movies are region free as far as I know I am playing US versions & Jap versions with no problems so far. The PAL systems might be a different issue.

BR Movies are region free as far as I know I am playing US versions & Jap versions with no problems so far. The PAL systems might be a different issue. That may be upto studios and movie studios are way too greedy to make them region-free. Also, I think movie regions are 1 to 6 and not PAL/NTSC/SECAM (although they're named that way to avoid confusion) EDIT: Some more info from Wiki about Blu-Ray regions... The Blu-ray movie region codes are different from the DVD region codes. The following are the region codes for Blu-ray discs: Region code Area A/1 North America, Central America, South America, Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong and South East Asia.
B/2 Europe, Greenland, French territories, Middle East, Africa, Australia and New Zealand.
C/3 India, China, Russia, Central and South Asia.
So I guess your movies from US and Japan are not region-free, they are just from same region. And look, India is again shoved with third-world/developing countries ..

sanjoy - PA always attaches a commercial invoice -- custom duties are inevitable when shipped via an international courier (standard airmail is hit or miss) @cc - yep, dvd region locking (and now BR) is different from PAL/NTSC which is basically used to differentiate between TV broacast standards in different parts of the world. BR is mostly going to be region locked, HD-DVD is not region locked for now and no content provider has enabled the ICT flag for either format till date... V

i agree duty is ineviable.. but its afterall Indian customs.. u can easily get away by paying less.. at the end of the day.. u get a 60 gb ps3 for about 5 to 6k lesser than the price of the 30 gb in India

nope sanjoy -- you cant haggle after the courier company has paid the custom duties. it's possible to pay less customs if the shipper has undervalued the attached commerical invoice OR you have some 'setting' with a clearing agent along with your tracking number.
best bet is to ask your shipper not to include a commerical invoice OR to write GIFTING PURPOSE ONLY on the shipment with an undervalued invoice OR to choose airmail (very slow with possibility of theft)

playasia dosent include a non commercial invoice or write for gifting purpose only,i contacted them and they replies that to me.your best bet to get a ps3 if you dont want to pay more is simply to wait, the demand is much more than the supply hence the inflated price
