bumped into jayant at the bangalore airport and had an interesting chat with him -- basically MS & milestone are lobbying hard to get the import duty reduced for gaming consoles and they've been given verbal assurances. come march, consoles might get cheaper and sony (along with milestone) might be able to introduce the ps3 at a competitive price point.
and another bamboo up nitwit anand's a$$ is indian pal games are being exported (you read right) to the middle east, where prices are pretty high. LOL
march-april 07 is confirmed as launch window for ps3 in india.

That is a sweet news. Now let's just hope game titles are released here without any delays. That is our main concern.

milestone is a software (multimedia & games cdrom) imports & distribution company. their alliance with sony-uk (& india) is based on sony india distributing hardware and they get to look after software -- milestone will do a better job at launching ps3 games on a timely basis than ms india IF sony india can market the ps3 properly and create a potential customer base for them (hopefully tbwa is more creative & in-sync with indian gamers than mtv india)

Sony already has a massive customer base in India in the form of PS2. Even from before PS2 was officially launched in India. All they need to do is to create a huge hype and strong lineup of games at the launch. MS has already helped Sony in India with their mediocre support to Indian gamers and lack of Xbox's biggest strength, Xbox Live. Infact, I know a couple of grey market shop owners who tell me they have over 10,000 preorders for 20gb PS3's that they'll be selling for 50k from next week while month-old 360's still lying on the rack, eating dust.

the playstation brand was built on the foundation of rampant piracy in india -- parents could afford to spend 10k for their children's birthday/special occassions and kids could afford to spend 50-100 bucks every week to keep themselves satiated with the latest games. i've seen many disgruntled tech/gadget enthusiasts buying the psp and then returning soon after complaining 'that it's easy to buy a car but not fuel' both ms india and sony/milestone have to convince indian gamers that it's in their own interest to pay (exorbidant prices when compared to what they are used to) for origianal games. MS india had an ace with XBL which they could/should have bundled with the 360 (along with a broadband trial membership or something) but they missed a trick. let's see how sony approaches this market... It is a tragedy yes, Indian gamers just don't think that games are worth spending 2k or even 1k on single title. They compare games with movies and though most movies ARE crap and not worth their original cost, games are totally different. If you don't enjoy them, just don't buy them. This may be the reason why console gaming never took off in India as much as PC gaming. Pirated games are easier to get for PCs. They are sold on eBay without any fear and user doesn't have to go through modding ritual. I just hope that changes with PS3 since most great Playstation games are console exclusive.

no, the 360 games are being exported to other pal territories as India prices are cheaper than AUS/UK.
as for the ps2 titles -- the packaging (box art, cd face, etc) are customised in india and then sent to sony. platform holders DO NOT allow printing of their artwork OR stamping of their discs outside facilities that have been chosen/designated by them (unlike PC publishers).

I wouldn't purchase a PS3 at this point. 35k sounds too much...better wait for some more time probably sametime next year and purchase it at a bit cheaper rate and probably some old titles will get cheaper too... I would rather go for a DX10(tier 2 -> card which comes out after 8800) card next year... wanna fully njoi crysis.

At this point, PS3 costs more than 50k...we are talking about next year. I don't think PS3 60GB will drop below 35k even next year. Let's hope games will not be above avg 2k/2.5k.

30-35 is not bad for the ps3,cause the ps3 is a much better media entertainment system than the 360 at this moment,as for games we'll have to wait.

PS3 will not be launched in India until 08. This Jayant guys info is highly inaccurate.
They have already announced after the HK, TW, Japan launch that they will concentrate on the US(N.A) , EU and NE Asian markets for the next 18 months and then consider launching in India and other Low Priority markets.
Edit: Just called up the regional Asia Pac VP and he laughed when I asked him about the March launch for India. He confirmed that the launch would only be in 08 and that depended of internal factors. He would not elaborate any further.

jayant is the owner of milestone interactive and i've worked with him for a while.
the sony guys were down last week and he had been travelling with them to gauge the market potential for a ps3 launch -- mar07 is their launch date for ALL PAL territories including india, provided the budget is friendly for imports (and he was quite sure it would be)
